New European Partnership on Chemical Preparedness Launched in Brussels
On 17 February 2025, the European Anthropogenic Scientific Partnership – Chemical Pillar (EAHSP-C) was formally launched at its kick-off meeting in Brussels. The event brought together representatives from DG ECHO services, JRC/MAHB, EMSA, ECHA, DG SANTE, DG MOVE, Cefic (ICE), and BASF SERT.
The meeting marked an important milestone in strengthening the European Response Coordination Centre’s (ERCC) capacity to assess and respond to chemical incidents. Participants validated the overall operating concept, agreed on the test and training architecture, and established a common standard for initial requests and situation updates.
Cefic, as the awarded partner, presented the role of the ICE network and its planned expansion, while BASF SERT outlined its function as the 24/7 operational contact point, providing technical expertise and emergency support. Contributions from European institutions highlighted the importance of coordinated approaches, information sharing, and integration with existing EU mechanisms.
The session also laid the foundation for future activities, including training, exercises, and the development of supporting tools such as a consolidated slide pack and visual materials for onboarding and communication.
Overall, the kick-off confirmed a shared commitment to enhancing preparedness, situational awareness, and coordinated responses to chemical emergencies across Europe and beyond.
