New MAR-ICE report highlights cooperation in chemical emergency response
The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) has published its sixth review and evaluation of the MAR-ICE Network, covering January 2024 to June 2026.
The report highlights the network’s role in providing expert information and guidance during maritime emergencies. It also identifies opportunities to strengthen preparedness through exercises, training and continued cooperation between the networks.
Established in 2008 by EMSA, the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic) and the Centre of Documentation, Research and Experimentation on Accidental Water Pollution (Cedre), the MAR-ICE Network provides 24/7 access to specialised expertise on chemicals.
Strengthening cooperation with ICE
MAR-ICE and Cefic’s ICE (Intervention in Chemical Transport Emergencies) network are complementary initiatives supporting chemical emergency response across Europe. MAR-ICE connects maritime authorities with the chemical industry’s expertise to support maritime incidents involving chemicals. Through Cefic’s coordination of ICE, the two networks benefit from cooperation and knowledge-sharing, helping authorities access relevant information when they need it most.
